When I was younger, I convinced five of my friends to join me on a first big international trip. I told them, “We will be sleeping under bridges and eating bread and water”, and somehow that convinced them.
We were college students on tight budgets, but I didn’t see why we couldn’t go. Two weeks into the trip, in Spain, we were sleeping on a beach up the coast a ways from Barcelona. In the middle of the second night, everybody’s cash and electronics were stolen along with my entire bag. Literally everything except for my swimsuit, sandals, and sleeping bag was stolen. Over the next few days I broke down a few times, was leant some money from a friend, got an emergency passport, and tied some cord to my sleeping bag so I could sling it over my shoulder. I kept traveling for another month.
Life has taught me to adapt and figure out how to make things work. I have lived around the world, I am educated, I am well traveled, I read often, and I enjoy new experiences.
